It is important not just to floss, but to floss correctly. In December, we covered changing your life philosophy from a short-term to a long-term with regards to your oral hygiene. The concluding principle was “consistently repeated daily actions + time = inconquerable results” and that is so true with flossing. Yet flossing has to be done correctly for it to be effective and safe. Today lets cover the techniques of flossing.
Since your fingers are going in your mouth, make sure to wash them first.
- Break off a piece of floss about 18 inches long. While this seems like a lot of floss, you want to use a new little section of the floss for each tooth, otherwise germs and plaque are only being spread from tooth to tooth.
- Wrap the floss around the middle finger of one hand and a small amount (enough to secure it) around the middle finger of the other hand. Using the middle fingers leaves the index fingers free to guide the floss.
- Now gently slide floss between teeth being careful not to snap or pop the floss down between the teeth.
- Make a C shape with the floss around the tooth and carefully pull the floss upward from the gum line to the top of the tooth.
- As you go from one tooth to the next, unroll a clean section of floss from the finger on the one hand and wind the used section of floss on to the finger of the other hand.
- And don’t forget to floss the back of each tooth.
Something to remember is, flossing is more then removing annoying food hiding between your teeth. The purpose of flossing is also to remove plaque and bacteria from between the teeth and around the gums, improving you current and long term oral health.
