Little Known Benefits of Smiling

in Dental Health

Regardless of the procedure, be it veneers, invisalign, teeth whitening or dental crowns, residents living in Sioux Falls have access to abundance of ways to improve the look and function of their teeth. There are many reasons for individuals to want to improve their teeth. Of course, there’s the obvious reasons, such as being able to chew correctly or correcting a tooth problem that is causing pain. However, there is another reason that is often thought of as “less important” yet is still just as valid, that being to improve their smile.

Benefits of Smiling:

Releases Feel-Good Endorphins:

Endorphins are chemicals released in the brain during a workout. This feeling is often referred to as a runner’s high. Smiling can duplicate this high to a certain extent, meaning endorphins are released without the activity. In other words, a simple smile can make a person feel better.

Strengthens the Immune System:

Smiling has been shown to have a direct correlation with a stronger immune system. This was discovered when the “Smiling Hospital Research Team” followed the progress of several hospitalized children. Those children who were visited by puppeteers and storytellers laughed and smiled more than the children who were not visited. As a result, their white blood cell count levels increased when compared to the other children. This reveals that smiling and laughing in fact lead to a stronger, healthier immune system.

Communicates Friendliness:

Various studies have revealed that people are more willing to engage socially with other people when they are smiling. In other words, the act of smiling signals to others that a person is open and approachable. This characteristic is of course immensely valuable in the business arena, but is also important in everyday life.

Seem More Trustworthy:

A study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh discovered that people who smile are deemed more trustworthy than those who do not. This of course doesn’t mean that people who smile are always trustworthy, but it does imply that they are at least thought of as such.

Improves Appearance:

Smiling suggests a person is easy-going, empathetic and personable. Furthermore, smiling actually improves the perceived attractiveness of an individual according to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology.  In essence, smiling alone can improve a person’s appearance.

The many benefits of smiling are revealed above. These reasons outline why the act of smiling should not be devalued. Therefore, to transform an unattractive mouth into one that a person is proud to show off via a smile is wise.
