An Apple a Day Keeps the Dentist Away?Posted May 13, 2016 in Dental Health
I am sure you have all heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but how about keeping the dentist away too? It is true. Eating healthy foods that are good for our bodies can also be good for our oral health.
Processed foods tend to stick to our teeth more than foods that are in their more natural state. To help improve your dental health, eat raw crunchy fruits and vegetables every day, especially as between meal snacks. Raw veggies such as apples, carrots and bell peppers -to name a few- actually work to clean our teeth as we chew and do not contain the added sugars processed foods do.
An excellent way to utilize raw foods to your advantage is to eat an apple for dessert after lunch. This will help to remove sticky food debris and plaque that has adhered to the surface of your teeth. Plus, apples contain naturally occurring “xylitol” which increases saliva production in our mouth and helps prevent the bacteria in your mouth from producing the acids that cause cavities.
Next time you are at the grocery store, add a few apples to your cart and stash them in places that are convenient to grab on the go, in your car or in the workplace fridge. Adding a few raw fruits and vegetables to your diet will help not only keep the doctor away, but the dentist too.
