Riding in The Tour de CurePosted Jul 06, 2016 in News
Our Sensational Smiles team is proud to be riding in this year’s South Dakota Tour de Cure for diabetes, July 9th, in Sioux Falls, SD. This is the first year Sensational Smiles’ team “The Pearly Wheels” has geared up in support of the American Diabetes Association and those who live with diabetes.
Diabetes affects many of our own patients. According to the CDC, 9.3 percent of Americans live with diabetes and it may be a surprise, but diabetes has a two-way street relationship with the health of our mouth. Not only are individuals with diabetes more susceptible to developing gum disease, but the bacteria from gum disease has the potential to increase blood sugar, making it harder to control the disease over all. Diabetes also often causes dry mouth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay.
As a dental office, our team feels it is important to help bring education about diabetes and help support the American Diabetes Association’s work. Each year the Tour de Cure raises awareness and money for vital education, prevention programs and the research of diabetes.
