First Visit to the Dentist: A Big Step for Little Smiles
Studies show that kids who see their dentist by age 1 are less likely to need dental restorations by age 6. Why so young you ask? Mainly to educate parents on what to expect in their child’s mouth, how to care for their children’s oral health, assurance that their child’s mouth is normal, and acclimation (which simply means getting used to the dental environment). By acclimating your child to the dentist, they realize the first several visits are simply “look and see” appointments.
What To Expect:
At your child’s first visit, we do a knee-to-knee exam and “lift the lip”. The knee-to-knee and “lift the lip” techniques are used to help the child feel comfortable with the dental exam because the parent is holding them throughout the exam. Parents will get a good visual of their child’s mouth and dedicated time to discuss their child’s oral health with the doctor.
What About Fluoride?
Fluoride can be applied at the parents request. Fluoride is a wonderful way to strengthen developing enamel and lessen the risk of future decay. Once the knee-to-knee, “Lift the Lip”, and fluoride is done, the child gets the gift of a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss in a handy bag to take home as a prize for a job well done.
A Note:
Early visits are good, but not a guarantee that your child will not get cavities. By going to the dentist early, this allows us to understand your child’s individual oral health. Having children start at the dentist when they are 1 gives them a better chance of having good oral health. Even if they are past age 1, early dental visits save time, money, and energy in the long run. Call us today to schedule your child’s first visit!
