What to Expect Following Your Crown, Bridge or Filling Appointment

When anesthetic is used, your lips, teeth and tongue may be numb for several hours following your appointment. Be careful when eating until the anesthetic has worn off.

What do I do if my bite feels ‘off’?
Although we take great care to ensure that your new restoration fits perfectly, occasionally a tooth will need to be adjusted once you have had time to try using it. If your bite is not adjusted properly, it could be uncomfortable to chew on the tooth until you come in to have it polished down. Call us to schedule an appointment if you suspect you may need a bite adjustment. It is a quick, painless process - most patients do not even need to get numb!

What should I expect after treatment?
Many patients notice little or no sensitivity to chewing or temperatures after having fillings, crowns, or bridges completed. But depending on whether the tooth had a large cavity, cracks, or other challenges before the work was done, you may notice mild sensitivity to cold temperatures or chewing for the first few days or weeks. If the sensitivity does not get better or go away after several weeks, please call so we can evaluate the area.

How long will my filling last?
Fillings usually last 3-5 years on average, but many different factors affect their longevity. You need regular dental exams and cleanings to make sure your filling is holding up well. If you see discoloration, chipping, or darkening under your filling, schedule an appointment for your dentist to look at the area. These are signs that a cavity may be forming around the area. With proper care, our fillings can be expected to last many, many years.

How long will my crown or bridge last?
Crowns usually last 5-10 years or longer, and can provide a much longer lifespan than a filling due to the fact that they are made of porcelain or zirconia metal (both are very strong). Teeth that have crowns or bridges can still break down due to a cavity. This is why it is important to regularly visit your dentist so they can make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.
