What to Expect With Your New Dentures

Congratulations on your new dentures! Whether this is your first experience with dentures, or you have been used to wearing dentures for decades, please know that all patients go through an adjustment period when they receive a new appliance. Some patients get used to a new denture quickly, and other patients find it takes several weeks or months until things feel comfortable and normal.

Break-in Period: New dentures require a break-in period before they become comfortable. This typically involves several appointments where we carefully adjust the material to relieve any sore spots. You must train your muscles to keep the dentures in place. As this gets more natural, eating will become easier. We recommend small bites of easy to chew food when learning to eat with your new dentures.

Sore Spots: Patients often develop sore spots. This frequently happens early on when patients receive new dentures, but it can happen any time during the lifespan of your appliance. Sore spots are easiest to adjust and address if you are able to wear your dentures for 3-6 hours before coming in to have them adjusted. That will help us precisely find and adjust the area that is causing discomfort. Please do not attempt to adjust your dentures at home!
