Planning Your First Visit
What to Expect
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while or you’re just exploring your options, you may wonder what to expect at your first visit. The first visit at Sensational Smiles is a great opportunity for us all to get to know each other. For children, it’s a chance to meet the dental team and have some fun getting used to the office. You can bring your child in as soon as their first tooth comes in. No matter what age you are, our team will make sure you feel at home and have a positive experience.
Appointment Duration
A thorough dental health evaluation
First appointments will take around one hour for younger children and two hours for older kids and adults. For adults, the first hour of the appointment is with the doctor and their assistant for a full oral evaluation and discussion about your goals, preferences, and plans for the future. The second hour is dedicated to prophylaxis (professional dental cleaning). However, keep in mind that if our evaluation reveals signs of gum disease, we will not perform a normal cleaning. Instead, we will schedule a second dental appointment to perform scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning.
Oral Health Evaluation
Helping you meet your health goals
The oral evaluation portion of your appointment will include full-mouth digital X-rays and a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan with bitewings. This helps us assess your current state of oral health in great detail so we can make recommendations if any issues are present. We use digital X-rays because they provide clearer images, minimal radiation exposure, and immediate results. Our team will also chart your periodontal (gum) readings to check gum health and screen for periodontal disease.
Patient-Dentist Discussion
Putting you in the driver's seat of your care
Your dentist will present the overall findings from the evaluation and discuss your overall health and oral health goals. If you need further treatment, your dentist will form an ideal treatment plan. Enough time is usually available for a financial consultation at the same appointment. However, in larger cases such as full mouth reconstructions, we may arrange this for a separate appointment.
Baby & Toddler Visits
Safeguarding your child's health
When you bring your baby or toddler in for their first appointment, they will stay on your lap for both the evaluation and professional dental cleaning. This is what we call a knee-to-knee visit as their dentist will sit knee-to-knee with you to ensure your kiddo is comfortable.
